As I went down life’s road, living my days as it thought should be
lived, ‘normal’. The average life of a young woman, by the world’s
standards. Then God reached down and pulled me up, close to him.  I had an
encounter with God and I have never been the same again. I embrace my new
life with God whole heartedly for he has shown me kindness and given me
grace. And now I have peace, joy, and the knowledge of my salvation. Have
you ever stopped to ask yourself some questions?
Before, I understood that God existed as Supreme God, heaven, hell,
the Holy Spirit and the judgment of our soul at the end of the world and the
fact that Jesus came to die for our sins and through him we are saved.
However, those who do not heed him, the wicked will be punished. I knew all
this but what did it mean to me?
Like many I just hoped that I would go to heaven because I did not want
to go to hell, how I ask?  I just hoped God would be merciful enough. I did
not want to pay attention to God’s ways because it required that they give
up some habits. Giving up these habits that harmed me anyway, like sex ,
which led to all kinds of diseases, which led to sleepless nights wondering
if I was pregnant or not, late night at the club sleeping behind the wheel
as I drove home, problems with men and so much more.  On the other hand, God
was asking me to exchange them for peace, rest, comfort, protection and many
more good things. In Mathew 11:28-30, Jesus says,

“Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads and I will
give you rest.” It goes on to say, “For the yoke I will give you is easy and
the load I will put on you is light.”

Living and pretending God and everything did not exist did not make the
facts go away. One day I was going to die and where was I to go? So I
resorted in living in the middle. Going to church, reading the bible once in
a while, praying as and when especially if I needed something so that I
still could satisfy my other desires even the ones I knew was completely
wrong, not for God but not against God. What I failed to understand was the
fact that anything that was not of God was against him. In Romans 8:6-8, it
is written,

“To be controlled by human nature results in death; to be controlled by the
spirit results in life and peace. And so people become enemies of God when
they are controlled by their human nature; for they do not obey God’s law,
and in fact they cannot obey it. Those who obey their human nature cannot
please God.”

So I thought to myself that I needed to give myself up to God completely
and whole heartedly so that the spirit could work in me and make me pleasing
to God because there is no other way. I could not change what God had
written and make the bible suite my ways. What he says is final; worrying,
pretending, living in self-denial cannot change any points in the bible.

As Jesus asked, “Can any of you live a bit longer by worrying about it?”
(Mathew 6:27)

As an average Christian, I learnt growing up that accepting Christ as your
Saviour, your sins would be forgiven and you would earn eternal life.
Confirmed in Hebrews 10: 28,

“In the same manner Christ also was offered in sacrifice once to take away
the sins of many. He will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to
save those who are waiting for him”

But there are a few other facts I learnt as I was going along that was
completely new to me:
•       First of all, Jesus asks us to declare our love for him and God publicly,
not in hiding like I was doing I didn’t want to discuss him in public
because I was worried about what others will say but he plainly says that if
we deny him publicly on that day he too will deny us.

Mathew 10:32, “For those who declare publicly that they belong to me, I will
do the same before my Father in heaven. But if anyone rejects me publicly, I
will reject him before my Father in heaven.”

If you believe that Jesus is Lord then why not confess it for from the
abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

Romans 10:9, “If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised
him from death, you will be saved.”

•       Secondly, we have to confess our sins, and sincerely repent. Not like what
I had been doing before confessing some and going back to it but confessing
all and not going back anymore. Hosea 6:4-7,

“But the Lord says, “Israel and Judah, what am I going to do with you? Your
love for me disappears as quickly as morning mist; it is like dew, that
vanishes early in the day…What I want from you is plain and clear: I want
your constant love, not your animal sacrifices. I would rather have my
people know me.”

•       Thirdly, accepting Jesus Christ is not all that is required but also doing
the will of God. Yes, in accepting him we are saved for he is the only way
by which we would be saved,

For John 14: 6 says,” I am the way, the truth and the life; no one goes to
the Father except by me”.

The story does not end there,

In Mathew 5: 17, he blatantly states, “Do not think that I have come to do
away with the Law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets. I have not
come to do away with them, but to make their teaching come true.” And verse
19 says, “So then, whoever disobeys even the least important of the
commandments and teaches others to do the same, will be the least in the
kingdom of heaven. On the other hand whoever obeys the Law and teaches
others to do the same, will be great in the Kingdom of Heaven.”

It is for this reason that Jesus said in Mathew 7:21, “Not everyone who
calls me, ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only those who
do what my Father in heaven wants them to do.”

I came to understand that it was not like I thought it was, just
accepting Christ as my saviour was not enough I had to do what was God’s
will so what was God’s will I asked myself? I needed to read the bible to
find out for myself. It is very important to study the word for yourself I
have come to understand. It is not enough hearing what others have to say
because there is a lot that God wants to reveal to us but he does that
through his word.
Without his word we are helpless, how do you please God if you do not know
what he wants?

•       First, I learnt that I cannot understand Gods ways on my own he has to
teach me his ways through his Holy Spirit, I cannot understand and practice
the bible on my own.

John 14:23-24, “Whoever loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love
him, and my Father and I will come to him and live with him.”

The Holy Spirit comes into our lives and nurtures us in following Gods ways
so that we will live a life pleasing to him. That is why it is called Grace
and Mercy, not by our effort but because God is merciful to send us his Holy
Spirit to teach us to walk on the path that Jesus has cut for us. This is
highlighted in

Romans 12:1-3, “So then, my brothers and sisters, because of God’s great
mercy to us I appeal to you: offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God,
dedicated to his service and pleasing to him. This is the true worship that
you should offer.”

•       In addition, it is important to note that we were created to worship God.
He created us; he moulded all of us differently for his purpose. To praise,
worship him and also spread the word with others so they may also be saved.

Romans 10:8, ‘what it says is this: “God’s message is near you, on your lips
and on your heart”-that is the message of faith that we preach.’

•       WORSHIP- Your life, everything that you do must glorify God.

2 Timothy 3: 16, “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for
teaching the truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving
instructions so that the person who serves God may fully qualified and
equipped to do every kind of good deed.”

•       SERVICE- To be used to spread the news and grow God’s Kingdom by being a
loyal servant.

1 Corinthians 12: 4-7, “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but
the same spirit gives them. There are different abilities to perform
service, but the same God gives ability to all for their particular
service.”

Reading the bible is really important for spiritual growth. For lack of
knowledge my people perish, let’s not perish because we do not know. Not
knowing is not an excuse.
Do not misunderstand me I am not judging you but sharing what I have learnt
so that we may all be saved looking forward to when Jesus Christ comes back
again to take us home, it is written, that day will surely come, just as
some day we will surely die.

I suggest you read ‘purpose driven life’ by Rick Warren; it would be a good
guide for you I believe as it has been for me.
